Pedaling Change: The Story of Two Wheel View
I’m thrilled to share and celebrate the impact of Two Wheel View, a Calgary-based non-profit that does so much more than “teach bike repair.” They use bicycles as a vehicle for youth empowerment, connection, and growth.
What Two Wheel View Does
- Earn-a-Bike: Youth (grades 7–12) spend 10 weeks learning bicycle mechanics, teamwork, leadership, and self-esteem. At the end, they earn a bike, lock, helmet, and toolkit.
- GAP Employability Program: Serving young adults aged 18-24, this program blends bike mechanics training with soft skills like resume building, job search skills, and financial literacy.
- Social Enterprise / Bike Shop: Bikes donated to TWV are refurbished and sold to help support their work. This model helps sustain the mission financially.
- Equity & Inclusion Focus: They’re actively working to close gender gaps in cycling mechanics and welcoming women, trans, non-binary folks into their space.
Why It Matters
- Access & Mobility: Some youth earn their first ever bike through the program, opening travel, independence, and connection to community.
- Life Skills Beyond Bikes: The technical skills are powerful — but equally important are the confidence, teamwork, and belonging that youth gain.
- Sustainable Funding: Their social enterprise model means they’re not solely reliant on donations; the bike shop supports their charitable work.
- Community & Inclusion: They partner with schools, community groups, and prioritize welcoming spaces for all identities.
If you believe in youth potential, equitable access, or community innovation, here are ways you can help:
- Donate a bike (or parts) — even “not quite perfect” ones can be refurbished
- Support or shop at their bike shop — your purchase helps sustain programming
- Volunteer your time or expertise — from mechanics guidance, mentoring, to workshop help
- Connect them to partners or funding — every network counts
- Help spread the word — share this post or their story
They’re located at 907 9th Ave SE, Calgary.
Two Wheel View shows us that a bike is never “just a bike” — it can be a path to opportunity, confidence, and community.
